Canada’s New Democratic Party criticizes Canadian government for allowing asbestos in children’s toys

Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) says that the Canadian federal government has been influenced by lobbyists for the asbestos industry, and current regulations allow asbestos to be used even in children’s toys. Pointing to test results that should the popular toy CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit contains five percent tremolite asbestos, the NDP has called on the Canadian government to put an end to asbestos mining, set up a relief program for sick Canadian asbestos workers and get rid of “horrifying” regulations that continue to allow use of asbestos in toys and consumer products, despite universal scientific acceptance that asbestos exposure is a health risk and can cause diseases like malignant mesothelioma. Canada exports 200,000 tons of asbestos every year to developing countries.
