First successful wrongful death case by family of mesothelioma victim in South Korea

For the first time ever, the family of an asbestos victim has won a wrongful death suit in South Korea. The court ordered the victim’s employer, an unidentified asbestos cloth manufacturer, to pay the equivalent of $135,000 to the family of a South Korean woman who died of mesothelioma in 2006 at the age of 46. She was exposed to asbestos at work between 1976 and 1978. The court determined that, despite knowing the risks of asbestos exposure, the defendant did not adequately protect its employees from inhaling asbestos and did not warn employees of the risk of breathing asbestos.
