An old Kentucky cotton mill is coming down slowly; now only one of the five buildings is left. Because of the size of the mill and because asbestos materials have been found there, necessary procedures and protections (like permits, inspections and use of licensed contractors for asbestos removal) make demolition slower and more complicated. A contractor informed the state’s environmental protection department that asbestos had been disturbed at the site, and in response the department issued a notice of violation for failure to notify the state before work began. The owners were not fined, however. Asbestos-containing materials have now been removed from the site. At least for now, a greenspace will take the place of the old mill.
