MAC Property Management, one of the principal property management companies in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, has met with the community to address concerns about its ownership and management of so many neighborhood residential properties. MAC has purchased and plans to renovate many existing properties in Hyde Park, a south-side neighborhood that is home to the University of Chicago. MAC’s recent renovation of the Algonquin Apartments raised concerns about the handling of asbestos in these older properties. MAC’s representative admitted that renovation began at the apartments without consideration for the presence of asbestos. In the middle of the project, realizing the mistake, MAC hired an asbestos abatement specialist to clean up the building. The city tested the building after the project was complete to be sure all asbestos had been removed and found that the property was safe.
