Mayor orders inspection of Boston’s steam pipe system after two recent explosions release asbestos on city streets

Mayor Tom Menino has ordered that Boston’s steam energy supplier conduct a comprehensive inspection of the city’s steam pipe system over the next two weeks. Two recent steam pipe explosions released asbestos on Boston city streets. Officials have discovered the cause of the explosions and believe that they are isolated cases of water getting into the steam system and increasing the pressure beyond the capacity of the pipes. Boston’s 22 miles of steam pipes are old and unregulated. The mayor also has filed legislation seeking to make steam energy suppliers subject to regulation like the city’s other utilities.
