A contractor in the UK has been fined for exposing two employees from another company to asbestos. Even though the contractor had been warned that possible asbestos was present, he started work without waiting for the results of an asbestos survey. The survey confirmed the presence of asbestos. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause mesothelioma and other cancers. The contractor was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £5,137.73 for exposing the workers to asbestos. The law requires that a contractor protect not only its own employees, but also non-employees at the worksite.
