Canadian deaths from mesothelioma, other asbestos diseases rising

According to the director of the Occupational Health Clinic for Ontario Workers, the number of Canadian worker deaths due to mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases is expected to peak in the next decade. The clinic is this year experiencing a higher volume of calls from workers with asbestos-related health problems than in each of the past three years. Canada continues to mine asbestos in Quebec and is one of the leading exporters of asbestos, mainly to developing countries where the fiber is primarliy used to strengthen cement.
