Arizona’s Department of Environmental Policy has announced an initiative to clean up asbestos problems in communities all along historic Route 66. Asbestos clean-up projects like those in Winslow’s “Standin’ on the Corner” Park and in Holbrook, Arizona highlighted the need for a specific targeted plan for the older communities along Route 66. These communities were built during the decades in which asbestos insulation and fireproofing were standard. When the insulation is disturbed through renovation, demolition or simply wear and tear, cancer-causing asbestos fibers can become airborne. The plan provides for the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to provide outreach and education and to assist communities in evaluation and clean-up of asbestos contamination in the target area. The Route 66 Asbestos Initiative is part of a larger plan to clean up asbestos contamination in all regions of rural Arizona.
