Asbestos dilemma means uncertainty for historic jail in Elizabethtown, New York

The Essex County Jail has stood in Elizabethtown since the late 1800s and has housed more than 19,000 inmates since that time. But the historic jail has been closed since 2003, and the Essex County Board of Supervisors must decide what to do with the building. This week, the board was to consider a resolution to have the building demolished. Preservationists may fight to maintain the old jail building, but there are questions about whether the building could be effectively repurposed. An asbestos study has been conducted, and whether the building is saved or demolished, the costs of asbestos removal are a major concern.
