The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has added the Standard Chlorine Chemical Co. site in Kearny, New Jersey to the National Priorities List under the EPA’s Superfund Program. The site has been a source of PCB and dioxin contamination in the nearby Hackensack River. On the site itself, there are tanks and drums that contain dioxin-contaminated asbestos, and contaminated soil is found throughout the 25-acre site. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) approached the EPA about adding the site to the National Priorities List in December 2001.
