House Speaker Pelosi supports reopening 9/11 fund for latent injuries
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi supports legislative action to reopen the 9/11 fund through which the federal government has attempted to compensate individuals injured by the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The 9/11 fund stopped accepting applications in 2003, but people have and will continue to develop illnesses for many years as a result of toxic exposures to asbestos and other hazardous substances during and after the attacks. Pelosi is not committed to any particular plan for compensating these victims and noted that there are several proposals on the table. Both NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg and former special master for the fund, attorney Kenneth Feinberg, agree that the fund should be reopened to help people whose illnesses had not manifested until after the fund expired. Many people received compensation from the fund for immediate respiratory problems caused by breathing the thick dust which contained asbestos and other toxic substances, but these toxins can also cause cancer and and other latent illnesses that will not manifest for many years after exposure, like asbestos-related mesothelioma.
