“Standin’ on the Corner” park and monument site in Winslow, Arizona commemorates the corner made famous by the Eagles song “Take It Easy.” But the park has been closed since October 2004, when a fire gutted the former J.C. Penney/Rasco Building that bordered the park. A wall of the burned building bears a mural that is integral to the park, but it was made unstable by the fire. And fear of asbestos contamination in the debris from the fire delayed clean-up and reopening of the park. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) awarded a total of $315,000 to the City of Winslow and the Standin’ on the Corner Foundation to restore the park and also worked closely with the city to provide technical oversight for the clean-up. This is the largest ADEQ Brownfields State Response Grant ever awarded. The park has now been reopened in time for the ninth annual festival later this month.
