The director of the Colorado State Fair has announced that one of the buildings on the fairgrounds is dangerous because it contains asbestos. The U.S. Navy used the building until the mid-1990s and, although the Navy removed a lot of asbestos from the building, there is still asbestos left there. The building is not used for fair activities, but the fair director reports that children from the neighborhood are going into the building and disturbing the asbestos, creating an unsafe situation. When asbestos is disturbed the fibers became airborne and can be inhaled, creating a risk of mesothelioma and other cancers that can appear decades later. It is estimated that clean-up and removal of the remaining asbestos will cost more than $500,000.
