Illegally dumped asbestos found in Connecticut town

A total of 1,000 pounds of asbestos has been found at three different sites in Killingly, Connecticut over a 24-hour period. Most recently, bags containing 300 pounds of asbestos were found in the woods behind a neighborhood of retirement homes. The material was contained and has been sent for proper disposal. The EPA has expressed concern that there may be more dumping sites that have not yet been found. Police are investigating construction and demolition projects to find the people responsible. Because asbestos exposure can cause serious or fatal illnesses, including lung cancer and mesothelioma, its disposal is carefully regulated.
