Minnesota Health Commissioner resigns in aftermath of scandal concerning suppression of information about mesothelioma deaths in Iron Range miners

Minnesota Health Commissioner Dianne Mandernach has resigned from state office effective October 2. Governor Tim Pawlenty announced her resignation on Tuesday, August 21. For months, Mandernach had been subject to severe criticism for her decision to delay release of information concerning the mesothelioma deaths of 39 taconite miners from Minnesota’s Iron Range. Mesothelioma is a cancer usually found in the lining of the lung that is attributed primarily to asbestos exposure.
