Fire in historic East Texas building creates risk of possible collapse and asbestos release

Security has been stepped up after fire raged through an empty office building in Longview, Texas. The intensity of the fire caused steel supports in the building to sag, risking collapse. The building is also “full of asbestos” and the City Fire Marshall warns that that people should avoid the area “for their own safety.” Even relatively low level exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, a cancer usually found in the lining of the lung. The building was built in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps with the rock exterior so typical of CCC construction.
