After mining company Cleveland Cliffs reported record high profits in the second quarter of this year, Minnesota State Representative Tom Anzelc urged the company to invest some of those profits in technology and equipment that would minimize exposures to dust in all phases of taconite mining and processing. A significant increase of mesothelioma cases among miners has been revealed, triggering interest from the Minnesota Legislature, the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Department of Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration for additional study of the problem. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer associated with asbestos exposure. Rep. Anzelc called on Cleveland Cliffs to reject its strategy of delay and denial and to solve the problem now.
