Although the building inspector’s office had issued demolition permits for two Tiverton, Rhode Island elementary schools, the demolition cannot begin until asbestos abatement is completed at the two schools. At one of the schools, the asbestos abatement will cost significantly more than the demolition itself. Rhode Island officials have now approved the application of the general contractor to perform the asbestos abatement, but the demolition date is uncertain. The schools will be rebuilt and are expected to be ready for the 2008-2009 school year.
