An estimated $500,000 is needed to remove asbestos from the former Sheraton Hotel in downtown Gary before it can be renovated into senior citizen housing, according to the project’s developer. The renovation of the former hotel, which has been closed since 1985, is part of the city’s downtown revival plan. The city may be able to provide a low or no-cost loan to the developer for the asbestos clean-up using federal grant money, if approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. Asbestos is linked to mesothelioma and other diseases.
