According to a research scientist with Rand Corporation, W. R. Grace & Co. might owe people with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases as much as $6.2 billion dollars over the next several decades. Grace’s asbestos liability is estimated to be particularly high because it continued to manufacture and sell asbestos-containing products after other manufacturers stopped. Asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma typically take decades to develop after exposure. The Rand scientist was hired by attorneys representing asbestos victims to conduct the study. Grace estimates its future liabilities to be much less. Grace filed for bankruptcy in 2001; it is set to go to trial early next year to determine the value of its asbestos liabilities.
