Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas is offering free chest x-rays on July 21 and 22 to West Dallas residents who worked or lived near the former WR Grace vermiculite plant in West Dallas between 1953 and 1992. The testing is being offered in response to a community health alert from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finding that the West Dallas vermiculite plant exposed workers and other community members to asbestos. Asbestos can cause mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lungs or abdomen, and other diseases.
People eligible for the free X-ray testing are WR Grace employees, people living in plant workers’ homes, and people who lived, worked, or attended school near the plant between 1953 and 1992. Thomas Edison Middle School and Pinkston High School are both located near the former plant.
