Connecticut’s health and education departments have directed schools in the state to stop using art clay containing Nytal 100 talc, after research raised suspicions that the talc is contaminated with asbestos. Asbestos is linked to the cancer mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs, and other diseases. Nytal 100 talc is mined by the R.T. Vanderbilt Co. of New York.

The state reviewed a lot of research before issuing the ban, including studies of an art room in Brookfield, CT schools which tested positive for asbestos. The state is also recommending that in the future, schools purchase clay that is talc-free, especially of Nytal 100 talc.

A week prior, the Art and Creative Materials Institute asked manufacturers of art clay to discontinue the use of Nytal 100 talc in their products.
