South Africa has postponed plans to ban the import of asbestos from Zimbabwe for another 30 days to allow negotiations between the countries. South Africa had previously announced plans to ban the import of asbestos from Zimbabwe by the end of June. The country also planned to ban the transit of Zimbabwean asbestos to other countries through South Africa. Asbestos, which has been linked to the cancer mesothelioma and other diseases, is a $60 million a year export industry for Zimbabwe. South Africa–which is Zimbabwe’s largest African asbestos market–had proposed the ban to protect human health from the affects of asbestos.
