Thailand to educate workers about dangers of asbestos

The director-general of Thailand’s Labor Protection and Welfare Department has announced that Thailand will take measures to protect workers and the public from the hazards of asbestos, control industries’ use of the toxic fiber, and watch for asbestos-related diseases among the population. Failure to comply with the country’s asbestos regulations is punishable by fine and/or up to six months in jail.
Asbestos is a fibrous mineral used to make fireproof construction products and is linked to diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Thailand is the world’s fourth-largest importer of asbestos, with an average of 200,000 tons per year.
