In a review of the scientific literature on mesothelioma research published in the March 2007 issue of the medical journal Cancer, the authors note a “slow but definite progress” in the understanding of mesothelioma, which in turn could lead to improved treatment options for the disease in the future. Mesothelioma–a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure–is a particularly difficult form of cancer to treat. But researchers are optimistic that an improved understanding of mesothelioma at the molecular level will in turn lead to new, improved therapies for the disease.
The study’s authors encourage people diagnosed with mesothelioma to look into clinical trials for the disease, and also to seek treatment from cancer centers with established mesothelioma treatment programs such as Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where doctors have experience treating the disease and are knowledgeable of the newest research, treatment options and clinical trials available.
