Rosetta Genomics and NYU Medical Center are partnering to develop a line of products for the early detection of mesothelioma and lung cancers, according to a April 23, 2007 press release by Rosetta. The early detection test would use a simple blood test to check for microRNAs in the blood of people who have been exposed to asbestos fibers. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure, in which malignant cells develop on the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers the lungs, abdomen, heart, and other organs of the body.
