Workers at Capitol Hill power plant tunnels exposed to asbestos without proper safety equipment

Contractors working in the Capitol Power Plant utility tunnels were exposed to asbestos for close to a month without the necessary safety equipment to protect them, according to an article appearing the April 4, 2007 edition of The Hill. The contractors, who had been working in a section of the tunnel known as the Capitol Visitor Center Containment Area, had done so without asbestos safety equipment with the understanding that there was no asbestos in the area. However, two safety reports issues in March 2007 revealed that asbestos was present in the area. Asbestos exposure is linked to the cancer mesothelioma and other diseases.
