The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is seeking public comment on its recently-issued draft research strategy document about asbestos and other mineral fibers. The draft recommends areas of new research to address certain scientific questions about issues of occupational exposure and toxicity concerning asbestos and other mineral fibers; seeks to reduce scientific uncertainties in such areas; and would provide the resulting scientific foundation for the development of future public policy. It was prepared by a working group of NIOSH scientists and engineers with experience in several disciplines essential for the study of occupational health risks related to asbestos and other mineral fibers.

The draft document, entitled “Asbestos and Other Mineral Fibers: A Roadmap to Scientific Research,” can be found online at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/review/public/099. For more information and resources about asbestos, visit the NIOSH asbestos topic page at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/asbestos.
